The martial law introduced in Ukraine on February 24th, 2022  as a result of the Russian Federation full-scale invasion led to radical changes in the field of education. Many pupils, students, teachers and educators had to relocate within the territory of Ukraine either abroad or continue their education in temporarily occupied and de-occupied territories. Under such conditions online learning became one of the main ways of ensuring the right to education and its quality. However, this format of learning has its advantages and disadvantages, which require analysis and consideration.

The main advantages of online learning during the martial law are: the possibility to continue education in a Ukrainian educational institution regardless of the residence place. Online learning allows pupils and students who were forced to move abroad or to other regions of Ukraine to maintain contact with their teachers, classmates, groupmates reducing the risks for health and life of the participants during the educational process. Online learning allows avoiding physical presence in educational institutions, which may be under threat of shelling, terrorist acts, infection with diseases and other dangers associated with the martial lawwhile digital competencies and self-organization skills  developing. Online learning requires the participants of the educational process to possess basic digital skills, such as: using e-mail, messengers, video conferences, electronic platforms and resources for learning, creating and processing digital content, etc. Also, online learning encourages self-organization of the learning process, planning time, setting goals, responsibility for results, self-control and self-evaluation.

There are also disadvantages of online learning during martial law, such as: insufficient legal regulation and standardization of online learning. Due to the suddenness and unpredictability of the situation related to the martial lawintroducing, the legislation of Ukraine does not contain clear and detailed norms that would regulate the issues of organization, content, forms, methods, technologies, evaluation, control, online learning monitoring and unequal access to online learning and its quality. Online learning requires the availability of appropriate technical, software, information and communication infrastructure, which provides stable, fast, secure and quality access to learning resources and services. However, not all participants of the educational process have equal opportunities for this, especially under the martial law. Some of them may be limited in resources, such as: electricity, internet, computers, smartphones, tablets, webcams, loss of social interaction and emotional connection. Online learning deprives the educational process participants of the opportunity to communicate directly with each other, to feel support, sympathy, empathy, friendship, collectivism, corporate spirit, etc. This can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness, depression, stress, anxiety, low motivation, loss of interest in learning, low self-esteem, conflict, aggression.

Online learning during the martial law is a necessary and important way of ensuring the right to education and its quality for pupils, students, teachers and educators who found themselves under the difficult and dangerous conditions. To overcome the disadvantages of online learning the joint actions of the government, educational institutions, civil society, international organizations, donors, experts, teachers, educators, pupils, students and their parents are needed. Also, it is necessary to use best practices, innovations, technologies, resources that will help to improve the efficiency, quality, accessibility, security, inclusiveness, humanism of online learning  under the martial law.
