The project of the Council of Europe "Modern Languages" provides for the improvement of the effectiveness of teaching foreign languages, primarily thanks to advanced methods and technologies, that is, methods of activating the cognitive activity of students. The following methods are of considerable interest:

- debating;

- role method;

- project method;

- use of multimedia (computer) technologies.

These methods cannot be called new. However, their implementation has not yet been systematic. What connects them is that their form and content enable the development of communicative and intellectual skills, which together form the ability to think critically.

In her work, V.V. Tarasova gives the following definition of the concept of discussion: a discussion (lat. discussion — from discutio — to consider, investigate) is a broad discussion of some controversial issue to clarify different points of view.

The discussion provides an opportunity to:

- to activate students' cognitive activity;

- to form a certain language culture, the ability to listen to the interlocutor until the end, without interrupting, without asking, without arguing or, on the contrary, without agreeing;

- to form a conscious attitude to solving the problem, to activity in discussing the problem that has arisen, to the goal of finding out the reasons for its occurrence, as well as its solution. Therefore, language is both the goal and the means of learning;

- to form a culture of creative operational thinking;

- create conditions for using one's own experience and previously acquired knowledge to acquire new ones [1].

 The discussion is a really effective method of discussing the researched topic. It involves a collective discussion of some controversial issue in which the truth is revealed.

During didactic work with different categories of students, it is possible to use different types of educational discussion [2, c.21].

When using discussion in educational practice, it is necessary to take into account the peculiarities of this method. Discussions in foreign language classes differ from discussions in real life, for example in politics, science, social life, primarily by their goals. Here it is not so much about finding a solution to the problem, but about acquiring certain skills, experience, applying and consolidating knowledge and skills during the discussion, that is, the conversation performs an educational function.

So, in conclusion, it must be said that the method of educational discussion improves and consolidates knowledge, increases the volume of new information, develops the ability to argue, prove, defend and defend one's opinion and listen to the opinion of others.
